#1 Re: Report Bugs » EG Update Crashes My Computer » 2014-10-09 18:56:56

I just crashed again this morning.  Everything was running fine--email, browsing, etc.  I was reading a news article in Chrome when suddenly EG asked it I wanted to download a video with a long, complicated name.  I wasn't watching any video at the time, though there was an ad running in a sidebar that I ignored.  Everything froze up, and I had to pull the plug and reboot, then do a System Restore.

Here's what the memory dump gave me.  If anyone can let me know what this means, I'd appreciate it.  Meanwhile, I'll stick with an older version of EG.

#2 Re: Report Bugs » EG Update Crashes My Computer » 2014-10-08 19:49:17

Thanks for your replies.  I uninstalled EG completely using Revo Uninstaller and removed the extension from Chrome.  Then I made a System Restore point before installing EG 2.0.2.0.  Install was fine until the very last screen, where it says to click Finish to be done.  I left both boxes checked (Launch EG and Help us improve EG) and got this message from the Setup program:

Setup
Runtime error (at 54:988):
Access violation at address 6FEDB01 in module 'util.dll'.  Read of address 4CED3FBF.

I clicked OK to get rid of the warning, then I unchecked both boxes.  I got a new Setup error message:

Setup
Runtime error (at 54:988):
Access violation at address 6FEDB01 in module 'util.dll'.  Read of address 491CE998.

As you can see, the only change was in the final address in the message.

I went to Task Manager and saw the EG installer listed, so I told Task Manager to End Process.  The final Setup message disappeared, and I was able to use the new EG normally with Chrome.  No computer lockup this time.  As of right now, everything seems to be OK.

Any idea what this is about?

I've been using EG for about a year and really like it.  When updates come around, I always accepted them--but not anymore.  I'm still using EG 1.1.8.1.  I can't update, because my computer crashes and freezes up.

I recently tried to install EG 2.0.2.0.  At the end of the installation, the final window said installation was finished and asked if i wanted to start EG, so I clicked on OK and got nothing.  The window wouldn't go away, and I couldn't start EG, either, by clicking on the icon or anything else.  When I tried to reboot, Windows failed to boot and gave me a DPC_Watchdog_Violation.  I had to do a System Restore to reset everything before I installed EG's latest update.

I've checked the forums without any luck finding a similar problem.  I don't know how to get any info when the whole computer locks up like this, so I'm not sure what to submit for others to figure out.

My system: 2013 HP Envy Desktop with Windows 8.1 and all updates, AMD3.7 gHz processor, 12 GB RAM.  No other download programs are installed that might compete with EG.  I use the latest version of Chrome (37, I think).

Any ideas?

Thanks MrJ for your help.  I removed all DL programs except EG, then rebooted.  I also had to go into Chrome's Settings/Extensions page and allow EG to run.  Apparently Chrome blocked it for some reason.  Now I get a download button when I hover over a video on a page, and Video Sniffer works OK, too.

If I run into anything else, I'll be sure to post a question about it.  It's great to know someone answers as fast as you did.

I installed the latest version of EG and used Chrome to visit YouTube.  When I watch a video, EG never offers to download it, and I don't see a download button on the screen.  If I click Add Download and paste the URL, EG saves a very small file like 100 kb that is just a link to the web page.  Why doesn't it save the whole file?  I went to Configuration/Monitoring and made sure Universal Capture is turned on for all browsers.  I clicked Reset and restarted Chrome, but there's no change. The same thing happens with Firefox.

Is there a conflict with other download programs?  I have a couple installed.  Do I need to uninstall them to make EG work?

Thanks for your help.
